Das Metal Detectors operate on the principle of mutual balance coil. There are three coils wrapped on a non metallic former, one is in center (called transmitting coil) used to produce very high frequency electromagnetic field in the aperture are and two equally spaced and equal number of turns wrapped either side of the center coil (called receiving coils) are connected in the opposite direction. Hence the voltages induced in the receiving coils became equal and opposite so in the normal condition net output is zero (called balance). The system automatically maintains a high degree of balance which is disturbed by the metal passing through the aperture resulting in a signal, which is amplified to operate audio/ visual alarms, interlocking and the reject mechanisms are required.
